This last month has seen the Blake’s of the Hollow West Ulster Tennis Open played out at the Enniskillen Tennis Club. The increased entry saw the courts stretched to their maximum to accommodate all 111 players but thanks to the glorious weather and the over worked BBQ everyone enjoyed a superb weeks tennis with 15 titles up for grabs across the A,B and C grades...for more.
With both finalists coming out of Mondays group both teams had already played each other three times in this year’s league with Francos Specials three wins making them strong favourites before a ball was served. While the qualifiers for the semi-finals from Wednesday’s group were known the seedings were still up for grabs as Eilis Bogue’s Pizza Slicers trailed Sheila Colville’s Chilli Monks by only 5 games going into the last round of matches. First match on the night had Sheila’s Monks looking to post a strong target against John Griffin’s Private Diners. The mixed matches failed to separate the teams ...for more.
The night’s second match was a much more predictable affair with top team Francos Specials anticipating victory over bottom placed Crème Brulees. With the Brulees fielding four subs the odds were stacked against them. A brave 6-6 draw in the top mixed match gave the Brulees hope with sub JR Dundas and Brenda Davis matching Davy Thompson and Louise McGann shot for shot ...for more.
Having just seen second placed Silverhill Ducks beaten, Seamus O’Connell’s Fine Wines had a chance to erase the damage of last week’s heavy defeat and rejoin the race for the second semi spot. They got off to the perfect start against Ken Yang’s Crème Brulees as Jerome Nicolle and Sonja Hateboer quickly secured a 10-2 win in the top match ove the out of sorts Clive Funston and Brenda Davis ...for more.
Up until this week it was much more difficult to call the outcome of the Wednesday group with three teams still genuinely in the running. However the combination of a blistering display from group leaders Chilli Monks, who heavily beat third placed Private Diners, and a tight 2 game win for second placed Pizza Slicers has cyrstallised positions. With all four teams still in the running for both qualifying slots it was set up for a tense and close fought session of tennis on Wednesday night. First up was a first v second affair as Sheila Colville’s Chilli Monks looked to stretch their lead over Eilis Bogue’s Pizza Slicers. Ken Yang’s Crème Brulees were first on court, still searching for their first win in this year’s league and tonight facing Seamus O’Connell’s Fine Wines. The four mixed doubles were all tight affairs with three matches finishing 7-5 and the bottom match tied 6-6 giving the Crème Brulees a narrow 2 game lead at the break.
