Blue skies and evening heatwaves. Typical weather for the Enniskillen Autumn Tennis League which got up and running last Monday night. Sponsored for the first time by financial advisory firm PFP Wealth this year’s competition gave debuts to nine new players and saw the return of a number of former club members to league tennis. The league involves upwards on 70 club members playing doubles and mixed doubles in a team format over the next ten Monday and Wednesday nights with the top four teams progressing to finals week at the end of November...for more.
Sadness was expressed at last week’s committee meeting at Enniskillen Tennis Club at the recent passing of one of the club’s stalwarts, Wilf Greene. Wilf had been a familiar face at the club for the past five decades holding all key positions on the committee at some stage from 1975 when he was first elected Club Secretary. For some years he also acted in the role of Treasurer and his past contribution to the club ...for more.
Monday's second match was a much closer affair. Table toppers Louise's Slammers were in early trouble down 4-1 in the top two mixed matches but put in strong comebacks to win both ties 7-5 and lead by 4 games at the halfway stage. An impressive 8-4 victory for Daire Dillon and sub Dominick Burns brought the Backhanders up to level terms...for more.
In contrast to sleet and ice, Wednesday night’s tennis was played out in perfectly dry weather. Relishing the conditions, Meek’s Marvels wasted no time in establishing a winning position with three convincing wins in the mixed doubles to leave them 33-15 up at the half way stage. Given that players on Monday night had to contend with hail rain snow and high winds it was no surprise that the scoring swayed back and forth throughout the night. In the week's opening match it was Jimmy Renfrew for Louise's Slammers who handled the conditions best winning both his matches 8-4, firstly with captain Louise McGann in the mixed and then with Ollie McShea in the doubles...for more.
The first big move came in the weeks opening match as Louise's Slammers dominated proceedings in a 58-38 win over Matts Backhanders, taking over top position in the Monday league. Top scorer on the night was the big hitting Nadine Stewart who amassed 19 games in her two matches with partners Cyril Boyd in the mixed and Kate McManus in the doubles...for more.
The night's first match pitched last year's Autumn League most winning pairing against each other as Captians Matt Dillon and Andy Elliot saw their new teams go head to head. It was first blood to Andy's Aces as Matthew McGann and the in-form Sonja Hateboer opened proceedings with an impressive comeback from 3-0 down to win 8-4 against Daire Dillon and Martina Boyd...for more.
