All decided in the last Round

The final round of Jazzey’s Restaurant &Wine Bar Spring League prior to the semi-final stages of the competition took place last week at Enniskillen. Only five points separated the top two teams with leaders Aristocats playing the Sweet Spots. John Griffin and Leonie Madigan just held on for an opening 7-5 win for the Aristocats over Paul Lendrum and Louise McGann. Likewise Donal Burns and Enid Redmond continued their run of successes with a 7-5 win over Nick Hambley and Lisa Greaves. Alex Knowles and James Morrison proved a strong combination in the mens doubles and Kathleen Murphy and Liz McGuinness also continued their winning ways which resulted in a 59-37 win for the Aristocats overall. This result meant that the second placed Jazz Standards needed 65 points against the Bear Necessities to top the Monday night league in the second series of matches.

The opening set of matches all went to the Jazz Standards and a big win looked on the cards. Resounding wins for Jerome Nicolle and Louise McGann and Jerome and Ollie McShea really set the ball rolling for the Standards. However, the decisive stumble came in the second last match of the night, when James Morrison and Cyril Boyd clinched a key win for the Bear Necessities. Although the Standards won by 59-37, they fell short by only six points to take top position.

The mid-week matches sealed Nice & Fly’s position at the top of the Wednesday night teams with a narrow victory over the Blue Notes 49-47 and both these teams qualified for the semi-finals. Finn Corrigan, Martin Sharkey and Martina Boyd all contributed handsomely to their team’s fine performances over the previous nine weeks, whereas Stephen Kettyles and Mary Griffin and Johnny Guette and Gwen Wilson were consistent performers for the Blue Notes throughout the league. A narrow win for the Cool Cats over Rhythm Section also by 49-47 helped the Cats to end on a purrfect note.
