An Under 10s event took place at Enniskillen Tennis Club last weekend. This event forms part of the West of Ulster Junior Tennis Tournament which is sponsored by Lakeland Veterinary Services, Derrygonnelly. The sun shone on junior players from Butt Hall, Cavan, Letterkenny, City of Derry, Sligo and Enniskillen as they started their matches on Saturday morning.
The under 10s played a round robin were everyone played each other twice. Corey Chambers from Butt Hall showed great promise and comfortably won all four of his matches. Aoife Crawford and Rhys McGrath enjoyed a very tight match with long rallies which certainly entertained the spectators.
The under 9s had a couple of players new to competition. Filipe Pinheiro a young, experienced Cavan player won all his matches. Local girl Amanda Paurniete gained valuable match practice on her first tournament on the bigger court.
The under 8s had the biggest group and all were from Enniskillen. They played some outstanding points throughout the morning’s matches. All of them showed the benefit of their recent training, with improvements evident to their serving, returning and rallying.
It was encouraging to see the wonderful sportsmanship in children so young! All played with enthusiasm, and displayed an excellent attitude on court. Their coach Louise McGann was particularly impressed by their focus and ball control. Each child displayed qualities and a level of tennis they should be proud of and this will hopefully provide them with the encouragement necessary to achieve their full potential.
