This year saw continued success for our juniors although study is becoming a bigger focus in many of their lives. 2015 is recognised as the year Eimear Smyth made a real breakthrough in competition. At the start of the year she emerged a very credible fifth in the National matchplays at U16 level in Waterford. Eimear went on to win the singles in the Lakeland Veterinary Services Junior Championships. During the year, she beat both Sarah and Laura and is still only 15 years of age...for more.
The recent under tens event sponsored by our local Dunnes Stores attracted a super entry of young members from Enniskillen Tennis Club. A total of 21 of our youngest juniors took part in a team event over three hours on a Saturday morning using six courts. With coach Louise McGann’s meticulous planning, the event proved to be an outstanding success...for more.
A total of 54 junior members took part in the Dunnes Stores Junior Tournament at Enniskillen Tennis Club last week. Each day was bathed in sunshine and there was a range of competitions from the under 10s through to the under 18s. The senior mixed singles saw Oliver Guette come out on top in a titanic match against Eimear Smyth in the quarter finals winning 10-8 in the deciding third set championship tiebreak. The under 10's summer kicked off at Enniskillen on 1st July as part of the West of Ulster Junior Championships sponsored by Lakeland Veterinary Services. 11 competitors took part, 4 from Enniskillen Tennis Club, 4 from Irvinestown, 2 from Butt Hall in Donegal and 1 from ATT in Ballymena. Kaelan Deery, competing on red court, was in great form. He won all his matches, bar one, by a large margin with his smart tactics and aggressive play. Kaelan's big brother Kyle kept the family success going by winning all his matches! He had a very tight match against the youngster from ATT...for more.
In a busy week of tennis, juniors from Dublin, Dundalk, Donegal, Belfast and all the local clubs in Fermanagh and Tyrone descended on Enniskillen Tennis Club for the annual West of Ulster Junior Championships. As expected, local players acquitted themselves very well and provided the spectators with some outstanding tennis...for more.
Waterford played host to the under 16's Girls National Matchplays last weekend. The Tournament welcomed the most prestigious of young tennis talent from the four Provinces. All sixteen girls had qualified from their region and then their province. The matchplay format consists of playing several high quality matches, where every player will ultimately finish with a national ranking....for more.
The prestigious Neil Gilmour memorial trophy was awarded to Alison Glass at Enniskillen Tennis Club last weekend. This trophy recognises not just sporting achievement but places a heavy emphasis on the qualities of sportsmanship shown by juniors both on and off the court. Any recipient of the Neil Gilmour trophy will have displayed the qualities characteristic of the man himself who was so active in county tennis for many years before his untimely passing in 2006...for more.
