In April, Lansdowne Tennis Club played host to the U16s National Matchplays. Half of the Ulster U16 representation was Enniskillen produced, a fitting tribute to coach, Matthew McGann. The ever-popular annual junior closed tournament took place at Enniskillen Tennis Club last week. This event is specifically for junior members of the Enniskillen Club. It saw over 40 competitors take to the stage from our youngest and newest recruits to our more experienced junior members. The U18 Boys Singles had a competitive line up and the top 4 seeds making it through to the semi-finals. An ever increasing number of juniors from Enniskillen Tennis Club are now participating in tournaments throughout Ireland during the summer months. Sarah Cousins took part in several tournaments at U16 level. Despite it being her first year in this age group she played many of the national events in the Dublin area and made two finals at the Dublin events...for more.
The West of Ulster Junior Championships at Enniskillen Tennis Club proved to be a highly competitive event with participants coming from 13 different clubs extending from Belfast and Dundalk across to Donegal, Sligo and Manorhamilton. Again the level of ability continues to rise reflecting the increase in the number of clubs with resident coaches. Local Fermanagh clubs held up well and many of the top prizes went to the Irvinestown and Enniskillen clubs...for more.
We have now reached the half way stage of the junior Round Robin which started at the beginning of March with 32 juniors taking part. This event has been generously sponsored by Devenish Practice and provides our juniors with much needed match practice in singles competition. It also provides many of our younger juniors with their first taste of competition and the most important aspect of course is that they enjoy the experience...for more.
Under the shadow of the Aviva Stadium, the aptly named Lansdowne Tennis Club played host to the under 16's National Matchplays. The Tournament welcomed the most prestigious of young tennis talent from the four Provinces. There were nine Leinster, three Munster, three Ulster and one from Connaught, contesting the boys and girls matchplays. All sixteen having qualified from their region and then their province, now got to pit their wits and skills against the best of the best...for more.
The Neil Gilmour trophy is presented each year to a junior who has made a significant contribution to the junior club in Enniskillen. In fact you could say that the trophy is awarded to the junior who most closely reflects the qualities of the man whose name the trophy bears and who featured so prominently on the tennis scene representing Fermanagh and Tyrone for so many years...for more.
