The annual West of Ulster Junior Tennis Open gets under way at Enniskillen Tennis Club from Thursday 27 June – Sunday 30 June. For the sixth successive year, Innes Redmond of Lakeland Veterinary Services based in Derrygonnelly sponsors this prestigious junior tournament. It forms part of the Ulster Tennis Points Tour which allows competitors to gain points in order to improve their Ulster ranking.
The tournament has already attracted competitors from Belfast, Cavan, City of Derry, Cork, Portadown and Trim. A large Donegal contingent traditionally make the trip down to Enniskillen, as do players from Irvinesown and Omagh and this year is expected to be no different. Local Enniskillen players expected to feature prominently in the competition include Eve Callaghan who won the U14 singles title last year.
However, there are also events for those juniors who do not play weekly. Novice events are for those who may not play tennis regularly but would enjoy partaking in the weekends activities. A barbecue will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and a holiday atmosphere is guaranteed.
A Tennis Tens event will also take place on Saturday 22 June, the week before the open tournament at 10.00 am – 12.30pm. This event is specifically for Under 10s, Under 9s and Under 8s and is a team event. Children taking part in any of these events should be capable of holding a rally.
