Probably the most amazing aspect of the GM Graphics Spring League is that it concluded only a week late as a result of the extreme weather conditions we have experienced since January. Typical of this league, the levels of participation were high with almost 70 club members taking part throughout the dark winter months, where even the weather failed to dampen the spirits!
In the first of the semi-finals, the Signs only narrowly overcame the Engravers 51-46, and contributing handsomely to this victory was none other than Veronica Bogue who has shown so much of the old sparkle that it will not be a surprise to see her elevated through the rankings come the autumn. Featuring strongly for the Engravers was Jenny Humphries and Leonie Madigan and Conor MacMahon and the progressive Stuart Miller, but it was not enough and the Engravers will not be etched on this year's trophy.
In the other semi-final, the Wraps gained a decisive victory over the Routers winning 57-39. In spite of a stunning performance by Matthew McGann and Alistair McClurg (Routers) over the formidable pairing of Paul Lendrum and Jimmy Renfrew, it was fine performances by Ruth Elliot and Clive Funston and Martin Sharkey and Bridie McCaffrey which set the Wraps up for their deserved victory.
The final was a tense affair between the Wraps and the Signs with so much at stake but needless to say the matches were played in exemplary spirit. One of the best matches of the night saw the top seeded pairings of Innes Redmond and Dominic Burns taking on Paul Lendrum and Jimmy Renfrew. In the end, they could not be separated with a 6-6 draw probably the fairest result. Louise McGann (deputising for Ruth Armstrong) and Liz Murphy proved a strong combination for the Signs and edged out Bernie Hall and Maxine Leary. However, once again it was Clive Funston and Ruth Elliot who put in decisive performances for the Wraps and their team emerged victorious 53-43.
The chairman, Maxine Leary thanked the sponsors "G M Graphics" for their generous sponsorship. "This is one of the most popular leagues of our calendar year and it is always so well supported by our membership", she added. Presentations were made to the finalists and the semi-finalists and all were well rewarded for their efforts.
