The eagerly awaited showdown between Cyril Boyd’s hotly fancied Drafts and Bernie Hall’s Debits took place Wednesday night, 19th March, and in an enthralling encounter the form book was turned upside down when the Drafts were blown away 52-44.

The opening mixed involving Innes Redmond and Dympna Slowey against Roger Howe and Ita Hughes. In an extremely cagey encounter both pairings were out to lay down a marker for their team however they had to settle for a share of the spoils in a 6-6 draw. The revitalised Arthur McKinney and skipper Bernie Hall then took Trevor Verner and Sonja Hateboer to the cleaners to give the Debits an early lead. This was quickly followed up by a 7-5 victory for supersub Conor “B” MacMahon, and Patricia Durnien over Cyril Boyd and Brenda Davis. The final mixed also went the way of the Debits as Bennie Sheridan and Gareth Armstong eased their way past Hugh Maguie and Aishling Kirby.

A real shock was now on the cards as the Drafts faced a 29-19 deficit going into the last series of matches. A good start was essential for them however Innes and Arthur quickly extinguished any lingering hopes they might have had by winning the first match against a strangely subdued Clabby Stroller and T.V. Draft’s skipper Cyril and big Hugh did their best to revive their team by seeing off Conor “B” and Gareth as did Aishling and Brenda against Patricia and Bennie however it was appropriately left up to Debit’s team captain Bernie and Dympna to deliver the coup de grace with a 7-5 win over Ita and Sonja.

Congratulations then to the Debits and indeed the Drafts in providing a hugely entertaining finale to the Spring League.
