Website of the Enniskillen Lawn Tennis Club - Junior Section
The Junior Round Robin event came to a close last weekend after a ten week marathon for all competitors. This event is confined to singles matches in which there were eight sections and three separate rounds of competition. Points for each competitor were totalled at the end of each round. Those with the highest points in their section moved up to the next section while those with the lowest total of points moved down a section. This ensured that matches were evenly contested, although the progress of several competitors caught the eye.
Daire Dillon moved up to a higher section after each round and he deservedly won the prize for the most progressive player. Another player of note was Matthew Duffy who can justifiably be delighted with the rapid improvement he has shown and Matthew will surely be a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming summer tournaments. The three members of the Lee family also figured very prominently in the competition with Mark, Fiona and Andrew all achieving very high scores.
There were joint winners of the top girl and the top boy prize. Claire Rehill and Orla McConville were both tied on 85 points while Conor McShea and Scott Gilbride just edged out the luckless Jared Monaghan to claim the top prize. Claire is another who has made significant progress during the last six months while Orla only lost one match throughout the entire competition. Scott Gilbride undoubtedly has the array of shots to go far in this sport and Conor McShea fully justified his place at the top for he maintained an admirable level of consistency from the outset of the competition.
A softball section was arranged for our younger juniors who were experiencing competition for the first time. Tara McConville deservedly came out on top having achieved more wins than any other competitor in her section.
Club coach Matthew McGann was understandably delighted with the progress shown by the juniors taking part. "It is only by playing matches regularly in events like this that our juniors will see real improvement in their game", he said. "And one of the most pleasing aspects was the spirit in which the matches were played", he added.
