Round 6 of Jazzey’s Spring League took place in almost perfect conditions last week. Seamus O’Connell and Maxine Leary (Bear Necessities) got away to a flying start against Kevin Burns and Jenny Kelly. Although 1-4 down, Kevin and Jenny persevered and began to get a foothold into the match, eventually clinching an unlikely win for the Jazz Standards by 7-5. A similar comeback by the Jazz Standards was in evidence when Ollie McShea and Lisa Greaves were 2-6 behind against Marius Blake and Janet Love. Using all their match experience, Ollie and Lisa did just enough to claim a 6-6 draw thereby earning their team a narrow 49-47 victory on the night.
The other series of matches on Monday was between the Aristocats and The Sweet Spots. Alex Knowles was in sparkling form for the Cats with two decisive wins with partners Bernie Hall and James Morrison. Liz Murphy and Vanessa McBrien teamed up well delivering a good win for the Sweet Spots over Leonie Madigan and Enid Redmond. However this was not nearly enough to subdue the Aristocats who ran out comfortable winners on the night by 57-39.
On Wednesday night, the two series of matches were very keenly fought. Johnny Guette and Gwen Wilson (Blue Notes) just got the better of Mark Cousins and Vivienne Kells (Nice’Fly) 7-5. Martina Boyd and Brenda Davis (Nice ‘n Fly) once again proved to be a formidable partnership and beat Lisa Greaves and Josie Gillen 8-4. However, match results for Finn Corrigan and Martin Sharkey (Blue Notes) are no less impressive with two narrow wins for each of them on the night to maintain their unbeaten records. The key result on the night however was the excellent performance from Stephen Kettyles and Johnny Guette who turned current form upside down to give the Blue Notes an unlikely 49-47 win over the current league leaders Nice’n Fly.
The other series of matches were between Rhythm Section and The Cool Cats. An excellent win for Sean Bogue and Moira McAdam (Rhythm Section) was matched by an equally impressive win by Martin Hamblin and Catherine Sloane for the Cats. Brian Donaldson and Roisin O’Connell edged out James Morrison and Bennie Sheridan 7-5 which put the Cats in pole position at the half way stage. Berni Cornyn and Moira McAdam enjoyed a good win over Sonja Hateboer and Ann Elliott, but this was counteracted by Catherine Sloane and Bennie Sheridan (Cool Cats) who had a decisive win over Maxine Leary and Roisin O’Connell. A narrow win on the night for the Cats ensued 49-47.
