This week had some very mixed weather which affected play in Francos Autumn League at Enniskillen Tennis Club. Due to persistent rain all day, Monday night’s play had to be abandoned as all four tennis courts were flooded. This meant all four teams scheduled to play were awarded 48 points each, perhaps a relief for some but a frustration for others who were hoping to make up any ground lost on the previous Monday.
Wednesday night however, was a different matter with very settled mild weather and the tennis was very enjoyable. The early session saw Ruth Armstrong’s ‘Crab Claw’s’ take on Bennie Sheridan’s ‘Baked Oysters’. The mixed matches saw subs Derek Elliott, Nadine Stewart and Leonie Madigan do their bit for the ‘Claw’s along with the regular players and a no-show for the ‘Oysters’ boosted the opposition’s scores. A late sub was found before the ladies doubles and after some close encounters the ‘Claws’ came out on top, with a score of 51/45
The second session matches were keenly fought between Maxine Leary’s ‘Thai Monks’ and Bernie Cornyn’s ‘Peking Ducks’. Maxine hoped her team would repeat the good start they had made the previous week winning by 18 points but instead after the mixed matches, the ‘Monks’ were trailing by 8 points despite all their efforts. The doubles were also hard fought with Andrea Crawford & Moira McAdam getting a draw with Bernie Cornyn and Michelle Kennedy. However the other matches followed the pattern of the first half and in the end the ‘Ducks’ won by a comfortable 16 point margin. The ‘Monks’ have a few injury problems but hopefully all players will soon be back to full strength and the team can claw back some of the points conceded on this occasion.
